Jonesy

We wanted everyone to know that Jonesy/Beau crossed the bridge this morning.  He became ill shortly before Ike hit.  He has been struggling since then.  We are not sure what exactly was wrong, but are pretty sure it was neurological.  He became critically ill yesterday and barely made it to the vet this morning.  Bruce was with Jonesy when crossed the bridge.  Jonesy was one of the best fosters we have had.  He is greatly missed at our house.

Jonesy was rescued from a local shelter.  He was a bit of mess with some skin problems and his nails were about an inch too long.  We took a bag of treats with us to the vet and it didn't take him long to figure out that he got treats when he was behaving!  Once he gets better, cleaned up and his coat grows out he is going to be a very nice looking boy.

Our vet believes Jonesy's skin problems are from extremely poor nutrition and a serious flea problem, all of which can easily be corrected with a good balanced diet and flea preventative. He is anemic and underweight.

Our Vet is very impressed with Jonesy. She said he is very smart and eager to please. After all his medical issues are taken care of he is going to be quite handsome.  When the tech began to draw blood from his leg he lifted it up for her and never moved a muscle. She was able to do it without assistance.  The technician and our Vet said he can fly catch about thirty treats in a row in the air without any effort at all.  Our Vet said he is one of the nicest Goldens GBGRR has brought in.

As smart as Jonesy is, we think he would do good in an active home to keep him.  Otherwise, if he gets bored he will find his own entertainment.

Foster Update 8/29/08:

I took Jonesy in today to recheck his hematocrit levels.  He is still slightly anemic.  The vet will recheck again next Thursday.  If his levels have come up to at least 30% he will be able to start heartworm treatment.  She commented today about how much better his coat and skin look.  She told me to change him from chicken to beef.  Lucky dog!  He eats 4 times a day right now and has gained 7 lbs. in the last two weeks.

Foster Update 8/25/08:

Jonesy has been with us for two weeks now.  He has made himself quite at home in that time and loves being part of a pack.  He loves playing with his foster brothers and his BFF Felix.  He is a sweet, easy-going boy.  He is a typical goofy Golden and is content to lie stretched out on his belly.  He is fine in his crate, but is sometimes resistant to going in.

Jonesy is recovering from severe anemia, caused by numerous parasites.  He is on a round of Doxycycline and hopefully will begin heartworm treatment next week.  He will go in Friday for blood work and we will decide then if he can begin treatment.

He is a smart boy and is eager to please.  He should be easy to train, as he is very food driven.  He is still very thin, but is looking much better than at intake.

Foster Update 8/12/08:

Jonesy came to our house today.  He is getting to know his foster brothers and the cats.  He has done very well so far.  He shows interest in the cat, but does not approach Felix.  He has already started to play with the other dogs.

Jonesy is a very sweet boy.  He seems to not have had any training; so we will be working on that.  He tries to counter surf and is a big beggar.  He does not seem to be a high energy dog.  He does demand attention by barking if you ignore him for too long.

He is being treated for eye and ear infections and will begin heartworm treatment shortly.  He is current on vaccinations and neutered.  Jonesy is approximately 2-3 years old.
